Laser Vein Treatment
Laser varicose vein treatment is also called EndoVenous Laser Ablation (EVLA). Laser vein treatment is appropriate for patients with varicose veins, leg pain, venous ulcers, leg cramping, and other symptoms of chronic venous insufficiency.
Dr. Malvehy has performed over 10,000 laser varicose vein removal treatments, thousands of satisfied patients, and hundreds of 5-star reviews across multiple platforms. It’s one of the reasons he is California’s top-rated vein specialist. He is one of the few physicians who offers revision or corrective varicose vein treatment for people who have had failed prior vein surgery (vein stripping, ligation, or phlebectomy), failed prior laser or radiofrequency RF ablation, or failed injection therapy. Because Dr. Malvehy personally performs a diagnostic ultrasound during the initial consultation, he is able to map out areas of prior treatment failure, scar tissue, and areas of concern resulting in a customized treatment for every patient.
EVLA laser varicose vein treatment is performed in the office using local anesthesia so patients can return to activity immediately.
We try to make things as comfortable as we can for you:
- All treatments are performed in our comfortable, modern offices in the East Bay or Sacramento. No intimidating operating rooms.
- Appointments are scheduled for 30 minutes. No need to take a whole day off work.
- You can drive yourself to and from your appointment. No need to drag someone along (though you’re welcome to – they can even be in the treatment area with you if you like).
- No sedatives other than relaxing background music and the occasional dad joke are necessary.
Dr. Malvehy will review your customized treatment plan on the day of your consultation and then again on your treatment day.
- Treatment usually begins with a small injection of local anesthetic to numb a dime-sized piece of skin in the calf or thigh
- A laser fiberoptic, a thin fiber less than 1 mm in size, is then inserted into the target vein and the vein is treated.
- After some more local anesthetic, the laser is used to cauterize the target vessel
- The entire procedure is performed without making incisions in the skin and results in no scarring. A band-aid and compression stocking are placed, aftercare instructions are provided, and then it’s time to get dressed and go home.
- Patients may resume normal activity, including exercise, the next day. Light activity is recommended day of treatment.
Dr. Malvehy may ask you to wear a compression stocking for 3 days depending on the size and location of the vein being treated. Because Dr. Malvehy targets treatment to the root cause of the problem veins, most patient who undergo laser vein surgery have durable improvement in their varicose veins, often lasting a lifetime.
Dr. Malvehy performs revision laser vein treatment for patients who have failed vein ablation or vein stripping surgery in the past. If you have had surgery already and it did not work, Dr. Malvehy will likely still be able to help.
Laser vein treatment is covered by most commercial insurance and Medicare for patients with pain, swelling, or venous ulcers. For patients with Kaiser Permanente insurance seeking laser varicose vein treatment, preferred pricing is available. For patients without insurance, affordable treatment packages are available.
