Sclerotherapy
Dr. Malvehy offers patients sclerotherapy as part of comprehensive spider vein treatment.
Dr. Malvehy has performed over 10,000 sclerotherapy treatments, has published scientific literature on the topic, and has taught national courses for specialists seeking to learn it.
Sclerotherapy is the process of injecting a medication into a vein in order to “sclerose” or close the vein. This is safe and effective in removing spider veins for aesthetic purposes. Dr. Malvehy exclusively uses Asclera, the only brand-name FDA approved medication for sclerotherapy. Dr. Malvehy prefers Asclera for his patients over saline or salt-water injections because the medication does not sting or burn when injected. Patients feel a small pinch with an injection but the medication itself has no sensation.
Sclerotherapy for spider veins may be performed during the initial consultation and usually takes 20-30 minutes. Any reticular, feeder, or root veins will be injected first, in order to provide a more durable and effective treatment. Dr. Malvehy may ask you to wear a compression stocking for 72 hours following treatment, depending on the size and location of the treated area. Bruising afterwards is typical and lasts 1-2 weeks. Treated veins will be absorbed over the course of 8-12 weeks.
Because Dr. Malvehy is a sclerotherapy expert and offers advanced techniques, including ultrasound guided and foam sclerotherapy, he is often able to deliver results where prior treatment attempts have failed.
Sclerotherapy for spider veins is a cosmetic treatment and is not covered by Medicare or any type of health insurance.
