Varicose Vein Treatment in the East Bay

At NorCal Vein Specialists in the East Bay, we specialize in diagnosing and treating varicose veins, even for patients who have not had success with surgery before. Varicose veins are abnormal veins in the legs that do not work properly. They signal a deeper circulation problem called venous insufficiency. If left untreated, varicose veins can cause leg pain, cramps, swelling, blood clots, skin discoloration, and even ulcers or wounds.

After a thorough exam and ultrasound, Dr. Malvehy creates a personalized treatment plan using proven, advanced techniques. All treatments are done in the office and require no downtime. For many patients, one course of treatment that targets the underlying venous insufficiency can fully resolve their varicose veins.

Dr. Malvehy often uses a combination of EndoVenous Laser Ablation (EVLA) and ultrasound-guided chemical ablation, all performed in the office. No need for vein stripping, surgery, operating rooms, incisions, or stitches.

We also treat a wide range of vein conditions, including:

Spider Veins

Spider veins are tiny veins in the skin, usually less than 1 mm wide, and can be red, blue, or purple. They are usually painless, though they can sometimes cause aching or itching. While many clinics still use saline injections, NorCal Vein Specialists’ East Bay office uses Asclera, the only brand-name FDA-approved medication for spider veins, as part of a personalized treatment plan. Unlike hypertonic saline injections, which can be painful, Asclera does not sting or burn, so treatment is more comfortable.

Venous Insufficiency

Venous insufficiency is a circulation problem where blood doesn’t flow back up from the legs as it should, so it pools in the lower legs. Leg symptoms may include heaviness, throbbing or aching pain, calf cramps, leg swelling, restless leg syndrome, skin discoloration, venous ulcers, and chronic wounds. Our East Bay team can definitively diagnose venous insufficiency in the office with an ultrasound examination. In most cases, NorCal Vein Specialists can perform definitive treatment in the office using local anesthesia.

Leg Pain & Restless Legs

Restless Leg Syndrome (RLS), leg pain, and leg cramps are often connected to underlying vein problems. At NorCal Vein Specialists, this starts with an in-office ultrasound that can identify venous insufficiency in RLS patients, and insurance and Medicare often cover this test. One study found that 40% of patients with Restless Leg Syndrome had venous insufficiency. A quick in-office procedure in East Bay can relieve symptoms in 90% of patients.

Venous Ulcers

Venous ulcers, or leg ulcers, usually occur on the lower leg or ankle, known as the gaiter area. They often develop after skin discoloration from venous insufficiency, can be very painful, and are hard to heal without the right vascular treatment. NorCal Vein Specialists uses ultrasound during your first visit to find the ulcer’s cause and creates a customized treatment plan. For most patients, a single visit to our East Bay location combines several techniques, such as EndoVenous Laser Ablation and ultrasound-guided foam chemical ablation.

Forehead Veins

Bulging veins in the forehead can become more noticeable over time because of genetics or fat loss under the skin. Once these veins become noticeable, they usually get more visible over time and rarely improve on their own. NorCal Vein Specialists offers a personalized approach to forehead vein treatment. We perform the procedure in our East Bay office; it takes about 15 minutes and requires no downtime.

Facial Veins

Large blue veins in the temples, known as temple veins, can be caused by genetics or fat loss under the skin. Prominent spider veins on the cheek, chin, and nose usually result from a mix of genetics, sun damage, and aging. NorCal Vein Specialists treats temple veins and large spider veins on the face in our East Bay office, with no downtime. Most patients receive a customized form of sclerotherapy using Asclera, either as a liquid or foam, sometimes with ultrasound guidance.

Bulging Hand Veins

For years, people looking for hand vein treatment or removal were told their only option was standard hand rejuvenation, such as injecting fillers to hide bulging veins. However, fillers require regular injections and don’t address the real problem: bulging hand veins. NorCal Vein Specialists in the East Bay pioneered treatment for bulging hand veins with Handscaping™., which uses a special protocol for foamed sclerotherapy (Asclera), with one or two injections per hand. Results are usually permanent, and most patients need only a single treatment.
